Demetri was born on January 27, 1931 in Viniani, Evrytanias.  His parents were Evangelos and Vasiliki Karagiorgis and he had two siblings Stavros Karagiorgis (Winston- Salem, NC) and Margarita (Lamia, Greece).

In the early 1950’s Demetri immigrated to the United States and enlisted in the US Army.  The Army assisted with his immigration status and he became a US citizen.  He was involved in active duty during the Korean War (1951- 1955) where he served with honor and distinction.  While serving in the US Army, he had the unique distinction of also serving alongside the Greek Expeditionary Force (GEF), commonly known as the Sparta Battalion, Greece’s military contribution to the United Nations forces during the Korean War.

In 1958, Demetri returned to Greece and married Mercina Thomaidis, who was born in 1933 in Agrinio, Greece, the daughter of Nikolaos and Eleni Thomaidis.  The couple returned to the United States and settled in Fayetteville, NC, near Fort Bragg.  Drawing on his familiarity with the military community, Demetrios opened his first restaurant in the area.  Their first two children, Evangelos (born 1959) and Nikolaos (born 1961) were born in Fayetteville, NC.  The family later relocated to Washington, DC, where they welcomed two more sons, Vasilios (born 1969) and Alexandros (born 1971). Demetrios passed away in October 2002.  Mercina followed him in May 2025.  Both are laid to rest together at Arlington National Cemetery.
