On Friday, February 5th 1966 at 4:12 AM, Viniani’s fate would be changed forever.

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred with the epicenter only 14 kilometers north of Viniani. The earthquake caused damage to many villages in Evrytania, mainly due to landslides. The same happened in Viniani, where many houses collapsed while others became uninhabitable, resulting in the village being abandoned and moved to another location two kilometers away to the area known as “Livadia”.

On the day after the earthquake, King Konstantine and Queen Anna-Maria accompanied by the Minister of Social Welfare and an army major, visited the settlement.

It was determined that a new village would have to be erected for the citizens whom had lost their homes, and thus construction began on what would become known as New Viniani.
