Apostolos
Alataris

Born 1932

Apostolos Alataris was born in Viniani, Evrytania in 1932, the fourth of five children of Harilaos and Evangelia (Skenteris) Alataris. Apostolos completed his military service in the Greek Army in 1952. In 1959 he married Anna Nikopoulos, the daughter of Basilios and Maria (Bacogeorge) Nikopoulos, also from Viniani. After they married, Apostolos and Anna ran the Kinotiko Kafenio and general store in Viniani. They have two daughters, Evangelia and Maria. Evangelia married Anthony Kendrick, and had one daughter, Apostolia Ana (Liana). Maria married Vishaan Chakrabarti, and had a son (Evan) and a daughter (Avia).


After the earthquake in 1966, the family moved first to Blacksburg, VA in 1968 and then to Charlotte, NC in 1969. In Charlotte, Apostolos ran several restaurants, and Anna was a seamstress in the early years and then assisted in the restaurant. Once retired they traveled back to Viniani and spent summers there where they built their vacation home. Apostolos served as president of the Vinianitiko Association of America for many years and was instrumental in completing many projects to improve his horio (village).
